Drowning statistics
- In the US, an average of 3,500-4,000 people drown per year. That’s an average of 10 fatal drownings per day.
- Drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional injury death worldwide, with about 236,000 people dying from drowning each year.
- According to the CDC, drowning deaths in the US have been increasing in recent years, with adults accounting for more than 70% of drowning fatalities in 2022.
Adult learn-to-swim class (ALTS)
Have you always wanted to learn to swim but never had the opportunity? Did you have a negative or frightening experience in the water when you were younger that prevented you from wanting to try again? You’re not alone! About one-third of adults in the US can’t safely swim the length of a pool.
Our Adult Learn-to-Swim class is for those adults looking to learn the beginnings of how to swim through gaining comfort and trust in the water. The class is designed to teach you proper breathing, bobbing, floating, gliding, kicking, swimming the freestyle stroke, being comfortable in deeper water, treading water, sidestroke, and exiting the pool. It’s a slow progression through each of these techniques.
- For adults 18 years or older
- Six lessons total over three weeks
- 45-minutes per lesson in the Recreation Pool
- Student-to-instructor ratio is 3:1
- Swim gear recommended: swim goggles, nose clip, swim cap (especially if you have long hair)

- Classes are not offered all the time and are based on instructor availability. Due to the small size of the class, it can fill up quickly.
